In 1895, Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac (father of President Ho Chi Minh) went to Hue to take the first metropolitan examination but did not pass. To prepare for the next examination, he applied to study at Quoc Tu Giam School and discussed with his wife to move the whole family to Hue for living.
Arriving in Hue, the family of Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac rented a small house located in the Citadel area (now the relic of President Ho Chi Minh's memorial house on Mai Thuc Loan street, Hue city). President Ho Chi Minh's family lived here for nearly 6 years, from 1895 to 1901, then returned it to the previous owner. Experiencing more than 120 years of ups and downs, changes of history, through many owners, the house is no longer intact as originally but still maintains an ancient appearance.
In this house, Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac went to classes every day, woke up early to study, and Mrs. Hoang Thi Loan managed all family work, did weaving and took care of her children so her husband could feel secure and focus on study. Two brothers Khiem and Cung were guided and taught by their parents to do housework and got used to working life. Family life was simple, pure, and full of compassion and love.
In August 1900, Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac was sent to work as a head clerk at Thanh Hoa exam school, and took his brother Nguyen Sinh Khiem with him. After finishing his work at the exam school, he went back to his hometown to build graves for his parents.
At the house in the inner city, at the end of 1900, Mrs. Hoang Thi Loan gave birth to her fourth child named Nguyen Sinh Nhuan (also known as Baby Xin) in difficult circumstances, with only her younger son Nguyen Sinh Cung, who was just 10 years old. After giving birth, as she was too exhausted due to hard work and worries, and not being properly cared for, she got seriously ill and died on February 10, 1901 (or December 22, Year of the Canh Ty Year) at the age of 33, in grief of her family and neighbours. Not long after that, his younger brother also died.
Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac returned to Hue, feeling hurt at the mourning scene; Unable to live and take care of his children alone in the Capital land, he left the grave of his good wife in Hue, and tooke the children back to his hometown of Nghe A, ending the 6-year period of his family living in the Citadel house.
With profound historical and humanistic values, the Memorial House of President Ho Chi Minh on Mai Thuc Loan Street, Hue City was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) as a national historical - cultural relic on February 2, 1993; and classified as a special national monument by the Prime Minister on December 31, 2020.
